About Us
Zamarod Afghan Restaurant’s owner Dor Niaz immigrated to the United States as a teenager in 1980. After running several restaurants in Northern Virginia and working as an interpreter for the Department of Defense, Niaz opened Zamarod following the attacks on September 11, 2001. He wanted to do his part to help heal relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan as an ambassador of food. Zamarod is the Dari word for emerald.
Afghani delight

First time here and I am hooked. Had the grilled salmon over sauteed spinach and pumpkin w yogurt sauce. Portions are generous, cooked to perfection and nicely saeasoned. Not spicy unless you add the green hot sauce, which had a nice kick. Loved the bread which was fresh and lightly seeded/seasoned. So many options that I wanted to try.
If I could give this restaurant 10 stars, I would!

I’m incredibly impressed by the flavor combinations and the quality of the food. Cannot wait to come back next time in I’m town!
As someone from a ‘Stan country myself, I can vouch for the authenticity.
We will be returning

This is likely the best Afghan cuisine in the DMV area & no doubt we will be returning very soon. It’s located in a quiet & quaint area in Great Falls Virginia. Alone in a corner, its outside is very inviting & appealing.
Absolutely incredible.

Hidden gem. Outdoor seating. Heating lamps. Owner is Niaz also the cook. You need to eat here now !
The flavor of the Muntoo was incredible

Did take out tonight and tried something new for the first time. We ordered the Muntoo and Combo Kebab. The flavor of the Muntoo was incredible and the bread this time was the best so far.
What a treasure!

We loved everything about our experience— our outdoor table (though the dining room was lovely), the wine selection, the relaxed and competent service, the aushak, the mantoo, and especially the Quabili Palow! We will be back.
An absolutely outstanding restaurant.

The five of us shared the appetizer sampler and then I had the dish with apples and lamb. An amazing combination of sweet and savory. We also had the rose ice cream and the pudding for dessert. Don’t miss this place— it’s truly a standout.
